About Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy is a healthcare profession that assesses, diagnoses, treats, and works to prevent disease and disability through physical means. Physiotherapists are experts in movement and function who work in partnership with their patients, assisting them to overcome movement disorders, which may have been present from birth, acquired through accident or injury, or are the result of ageing or life-changing events. Physiotherapy can help you recover from injury, reduce pain and stiffness, and increase mobility. A physiotherapist can also help you prevent further injury by listening to your needs and working with you to plan the most appropriate treatment for your condition, including setting goals and treatment outcomes.

When to see a Physiotherapist

Most people visit a Physiotherapist when they are experiencing pain in the muscles or joints, or nerve pain. Examples of what many people have visited our Physio’s includes:
  • Neck, back, and joint pain, including disc injuries
  • Postural back pain
  • Muscle strains and spasms
  • Nerve entrapments such as carpal tunnel and sciatica
  • Headaches, migraine and jaw pain, as well as
  • Sporting injuries
If you are not sure if we can help, feel free to give our clinic reception a call and request a ‘call back’ from David. He can have a brief chat with you about your concerns, and advise you as to what approach is most suitable.

What to expect at your first appointment

Your first Physiotherapy appointment will be about 45-60 minutes long. During this time your Physio will discuss with you your medical history in relation to the reason for your visit, as well as other relevant information such as daily routines like office work or sports, which may be contributing factors. Your Physio will then carry out a number of movement based tests. These tests may include orthopaedic testing, a spinal examination, postural assessment, muscle testing, and neurological testing. To carry out these tests it is often necessary for you to remove your outer layers of clothing, depending on which body part/s require assessment. You will never have to remove your underwear, and gowns and towelling are always available to cover areas that are not being assessed. You will usually receive treatment on your first visit unless your Physio determines that it’s un-safe to do so. Return visits are usually 20-30 minutes long and offer treatment & periodic comparative assessments to work towards your goals.
